P4-3GHz
2004-2006: PC
P4-3GHz E (800MHz Bus, 1Mb cache, HT), ASUS P4P 800SE motherboard (LAN\Sound\SATA onboard), 512Mb DDR 3200 RAM, Maxtor 6Y080LO IDE drive
(2Mb Cache, 7200RPM, ATA100), Maxtor 6Y120M0 SATA drive (2Mb Cache, 7200RPM, ATA100), ATI9200SE video card, Pioneer 108 DVD±R/RW dual
layer writer 16/40 (Firmware 1.14), CMedia 8738/C3DX PCI sound card, 56k Modem. Upgraded with Akasa 400W Power Supply and 12cm
Panaflo case fan.
Moved to thermally advantaged case 5100S (22/7/2005).
This machine was very powerful, but difficult to cool sufficiently.
This should be replaced by a well integrated Intel Core 2 Duo processor for lower power consumption.
This PC was originally placed in a non-thermally advantaged case by Linx Computers.
They seemed completely unaware of the recommended thermal
requirements for cool and quiet operation of the P4 Prescott chip.
A thermally advantaged case is required to keep case temperatures at less than 38oC
and hence keep the CPU fan on a low speed setting for less noise.
Modifications
1. Front panel audio extender cables (27/7/2005)
2. Q-TEC Prescott CPU cooling duct added (25/7/2005)
3. Panaflo 12cm (7V, 48CFM, 18dB) case fan added (22/7/2005)
- For TAC 1.1 compliance.
- Positioning the fan at the back is closer to the motherboard.
This provides additional cooling and low noise.
4. Akasa 400W ultra quiet (18dB) aPFC power supply added (8/2/2005)
- The original Tsunami 400W power supply had a 30dB fan rating.
5. CMedia 8738/C3DX PCI sound card used from my old P3-800 (13/2/2005)
- The on-board ADI1985 SoundMax sound driver is sloppy and caused clicks playing MP3s in WinAmp.
